From the 2025 Physics Alumni Newsletter
Several Physics Department faculty managed this year’s Homecoming demo show on Saturday, October 25, from 3–6 p.m. We joined the Festival on the Quad again this year, where we had a table near the steps of Wait Chapel. At the event we had many demonstrations that were continuous and hands-on. All the demonstrations were designed to be fun and encourage participation by everyone, including children.
After the exciting win over SMU in the last few seconds of the football game, many alumni, friends, and families enjoyed performing and watching the demonstrations. The most popular included the vortex cannon moderated by Chair Martin Guthold with assistance from Rick Matthews and Keith Bonin; the telescope set up by new faculty member Alejandro Cardenas-Avendano; and the rotary platform with weights, where Jack Dostal helped participants control their rotation speed like an Olympic ice skater.
It was great fun to see how excited children and adults were to try the demonstrations, and it was also great to catch up with alumni and their families. We hope to see many of you next year.
