Prof. Zhong Lin of Binghamton University’s Department of Physics will present “Probing Emergent Phenomena in Layered Magnets” at the Wake Forest Physics Colloquium on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at 4 p.m. in Olin 101. A reception will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Olin lobby.

Lin will discuss atomically thin antiferromagnetic insulators and how magnetism interacts with topology and the crystal lattice. The talk will cover magnetic order that depends on whether a material has an even or odd number of layers, a lateral exchange bias effect, and spin-lattice coupling in transition metal phosphorus trichalcogenides.

Lin joined Binghamton University in 2022 after earning his Ph.D. at Penn State in 2018 and completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Washington. His lab synthesizes crystals, fabricates two-dimensional heterostructures, and performs magneto-optical measurements.
