October 1 colloquium: Quantum trajectories and stochastic thermal machines
Prof. Gabriel Landi of the University of Rochester will present “Quantum trajectories and stochastic thermal machines” at the Wake Forest Physics Colloquium on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 4 p.m. in Olin 101. A reception will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Olin Lobby.
Landi will discuss how researchers describe energy flow and fluctuations in quantum systems, beginning with the example of cooling a superconducting qubit using an absorption refrigerator. The talk will connect quantum dynamics with experimental measurements and explore feedback strategies based on detecting quantum jumps, with examples from superconducting qubits, quantum dots, and atomic masers.
Landi received his Ph.D. from the University of São Paulo in 2012 and joined the University of Rochester in 2022 as an associate professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. He is also an associate editor at PRX Quantum.
