Prof. Nandini Trivedi of The Ohio State University’s Department of Physics will present “Fractionalized electrons and fractionalized spins in quantum materials” at the Wake Forest Physics Colloquium on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at 4 p.m. in Olin 101. A reception begins at 3:30 p.m. in the Olin lobby.

An electron has a characteristic charge and spin, but collective behavior in quantum materials can produce excitations that carry fractions of these properties. Trivedi will explain why this fractionalization occurs and how researchers can detect it. She will also discuss the potential of fractionalized excitations for logical qubits in quantum computing.

Trivedi joined Ohio State’s Physics Department in 2004 and earned her Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1987.
